His early childhood was spent in the countryside; calm, cheerful and beautiful. It is surely there where the future commander Julio Martinez Acosta acquires manly temper of his spirit, that such influence rose in the years in his military career and his personal life; that's where he learnt to love freedom, heard in the verb of Juan Montalvo, from that pure source of republicanism, lessons later defended as the eternal ideal of his life; because the great outlaw for many months remained housed in his parents' house . So Julio Martinez learned to love the beautiful in the grandeur of nature, whose manifestations always demonstrated immense predilection; that is where the example of his mother, who in desperate effort of courage and pride tried to save the manuscripts of "The Catenary " when Vetntimilla soldiers raid her home to arrest the great outlaw, taught him what is worth, and that's the reason why in his years as man as revolutionary man, he felt respect and admiration for the claims of democracy and freedom.
He entered the army at 15 years old. Julio Martinez Acosta made a brilliant military career, participating in all the struggles for the maintenance of liberalism in Ecuador, helping from different angles to its strengthening and making available to its noble ideals all his skills and all his economic assets . He reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, when he was just 27 years old. In his youth, he could already boast a vast illustration of a large background of military and political culture; he had under his command several battalions; and he participated to the Liberal Revolution of 1895.
It was also the first assistant of General Rafael Arellano, played the Undersecretary of the Ministry of War and Navy in the second administration of Gen. Alfaro.
